A Former Pub Operator Learns Valuable Lessons Posted on 2024-02-232024-02-23 By Cath B I’m now a former pub owner, and it’s been exactly one month since we left. I’ve taken this time to reflect and rediscover myself.Yes, I lost myself in the process, and it became clear that the pub trade was not for us; it’s a calling suited for those who thrive on entertaining people and working long and unsociable hours. I’m the opposite; I’m an early bird who loves getting up early in the morning, and I enjoy being in the background, organising, planning, liaising with suppliers and sorting administrative tasks, marketing, and PR.It makes me a great business operator, but unfortunately, I am not a “Front-of-the-house” person, and operating a pub isn’t merely a “job” but a lifestyle. You have to love the trade and love socialising with people. You have to be prepared to roll up your sleeves and become a multi-trade handyman/woman.And be prepared for unexpected issues such as flooding, overflooded drains, power cuts, water leaks, no water, no staff…There’s no time off on weeknights, weekends, Christmas etc.Saying that, it’s rewarding as well; you meet lovely people who want you to succeed and be happy, and for the right person, it can be an ideal situation. I’m proud of my partner and me; we took a leap and tried something new. It was scary, but at least now we know and have learned. I’m truly grateful for the invaluable experience and the many skills acquired during this journey. Onward and upwards 🙂 Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)
